Swinging at the Blue Note, NYC

On Tuesday, January 13, 2009 we will begin the first night of our 4th annual Elvin Jones Tribute at the Blue Note in New York City’s Greenwich Village. I’ve always loved going to the Apple, and the trip to the Note often reminds me of my first visit when Branford and Wynton stayed on Bleecker St. in the same building as another great drummer, Art Blakey.

In previous years, we’ve mostly performed Elvin’s original and personal favorite compositions, along with music from my cd Minions Dominion (which features Elvin). This year, we will be adding the music of John Coltrane—with whom Master Jones is most closely associated—including a few movements from the classic Love Supreme. The group will feature my homeboy and virtuoso trumpeter Marlon Jordan, the inestimable Charnette Moffett on bass, “Preacher Man” Mark Gross on saxophones and my brother Jason on drums.

Looking forward to seeing you one or more of those nights—Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Chanukah and of course Happy New Year to all!
